Bedroom for a Single Woman

Ah, your own apartment. And there’s no man in your life to clutter it up with sports memorabilia, beer can collections and girly magazines. It’s yours and yours alone, to do as you please.

That includes decorating it. If you’ve just moved out of your parent’s home or getting your first apartment after college, then you probably brought along the bedroom furniture you had there. All well and good, unless your bedspread still has Holly Hobby on it.

Now the only question is, how do you turn your bedroom into one that’s appropriate for a single woman who is ready to take on the world? If you’re just starting out an on a budget, you want to make sure that you build your bedroom one piece at a time. Sure, you can go to IKEA for some discount bedroom furniture, but as the old saying goes, “you get what you pay for.”

Instead, you want to invest in bedroom furniture that will last. But you don’t have to do it all at once. For example, you can settle on a style of furniture such as modern, and then build from there. Start with a nice modern bed, such as a Japanese style modern platform bed – something that is classic but stylish – then add the nightstands, dressers, wardrobe and other furnishings as you can afford them. By the way, one of the great things about modern bedroom furniture is that pieces can be mixed and matched easily. You don’t have to buy an entire bedroom furniture set up front and figure out how to pay for it. You can add a piece at a time as you discover something that is interesting and which fits your ever evolving tastes.

Modern furniture has an added bonus. If you are a single woman and planning on having a date visit your house now and then, you don’t want your bedroom to look like a boudoir with lots of silk bedding, fluffy pillows and candles. It can come across as a lair for love and your date may mistakenly think that you are more interested in him than you are.

A modern bedroom still has a chic warmth to it, but you can dress it up or down to match your mood and your message. Add your own personality to the room through color, fabrics and window treatments while letting the furniture be classic, timeless and a bit mysterious. If you don’t want to come across as a vixen, avoid bold, deep colors and soft lighting, at least when you have visitors over. Afterwards, it’s O.K. to dim the lights, let your hair down and revel in a place that you, and only you, call home.
